Following the dwindling fortune of oil, Former Provost Marshall of the Nigerian Army, General Idada Ikponmwen (rtd) has charged President Muhammadu Buhari to diversify the economy as a means to garner resources for the government.

Idada stated this in an Interview in Benin City where he noted that the issue of the mono-economy has been a core issue for a long time, pointing out
that the dependence on oil has caused a serious setback for the nation and its people.

He noted that there is already a noticeable failure in purchase of the country’s oil which is a major source of the country’s resources, saying that other
other sectors of the economy must be looked into as virtually all Nigerians doesn’t see need to sustain other means of getting resources for the nation.

According to him, “It is pertinent to say that the issue of a mono-economy, the issue of dependence only and mostly on oil resources has been a subject of discussion for many years.

The danger on relying on oil and oil related resources alone has been a very serious setback so much that people branded it oil doom rather than oil boom. This is because Nigerians virtually didn’t see any more need to sustain other means of getting resources for the nation. Things like timber,? groundnut, cocoa all of which used to make a lot of money accruable to the nation’s fund.

Nigerians no longer saw those things as reasonable economic benefit for the nation, rather, they now saw all them as a waste of time because oil money has come to be the quick way not? only for the government but for individuals.

Against this backdrop, the change mantra of the present? government must seriously address the need to diversify our means of national resources. We must go back to agriculture and look at all the former means of generating funds for government and government must be seen to pursue this with all determination and zeal”,  he said.
