President Muhammadu Buhari must consider the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), if he really wants the oil sector to function optimally.

This was the position of Senator Emmanuel Paulker, former chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), on Monday when he spoke with newsmen in Abuja at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Paulker, who was at the party’s secretariat to submit his expression of interest and nomination form to vie for the PDP governorship ticket in Bayelsa State in the upcoming election, rued the missed opportunity by the seventh session of the Senate in not passing the Bill even after doing “good work” on it.

According to him, the present administration must ensure that the bill is re-presented to the parliament by whatever means possible, with the hope that the current crop of lawmakers will expedite action on its passage and free the oil industry from the encumbrances militating against its expected growth.

His words; “A lot of discourse has taken place on the issue concerning the PIB. As the chairman of Senate Petroleum Upstream Committee in the last Senate, I had the privilege of chairing the works on the all-important Bill.

“The PIB is a very important bill and don’t lose sight to the fact that the PIB was an executive bill. And the seventh Senate has elapsed and that means either the executive introduces the bill to the National Assembly or let it come through a private bill.”
