•  Vows to Reject Any Election Conducted By Zakari

By Rotimi Akinwunmi – Abuja

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday urged the international community to call President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to order over what it described as the draconian and authoritarian rule by the present government.

The opposition party who accused the president and his party of undemocratic tendencies also stated emphatically that it’s opposition to the appointment of Mrs Amina Zakari as the acting Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is unwavering, and will not accept any election conducted under her watch, in which the PDP might be declared the loser.

Olisa Metuh, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP who made the observations on behalf of the party during visits to the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and International Republican Institute (IRI) in Abuja said the opposition party won’t accept any election conducted by the “daughter” of the president.

Thursday’s visit to the foremost American institutes in Abuja by Metuh may not be unconnected to the planned visit of President Buhari to the United States this weekend.

In accusing the president of dictatorship and arm-twist of opposition, the PDP spokesman decried Buhari’s style of leadership as he accused the president of sidelining  governors of the opposition on national issues, adding that under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, governors from the opposition parties were taken along even when travelling out of the country on international engagements.

He raised the alarm that President Buhari is working very hard to silence the opposition by harassing, muscling and intimidating them.

Particularly, he noted the issue of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who he said was elected by his colleagues at the National Assembly, stressing that the presidency was using the security apparatus to intimidate him.

“I want to alert the international community on issues and if they are not handled very well may truncate our democracy. We have witnessed a remarkable change in the past few days.

“We encourage freedom and in just two months in power, we have witnessed organised witch-hunt by the leadership of APC in trying to muscle our people,” he said.

Metuh told the international community that the INEC Acting Chairman is a ‘daughter’ to Buhari and as such would not be fair in the discharge of her responsibility as the nation’s electoral umpire.

“We have INEC and the idea is that people heading it should be above board, but the present ruling party has appointed the ‘daughter’ of the President to head the position. There is nowhere in the world where such has happened, a person who has a relationship with the President.

“I am drawing the attention of the IRI. Buhari has appointed his ‘daughter’ as INEC Chairman, we believe there will not be fairness.

“It will be very difficult to accept any result of the election conducted by Amina Zakari. It will be difficult for PDP to accept result of election if we lose under Zakari” he said.

Responding, NDI Resident Country Director, Jasper Veen noted that anywhere in the world, the most important area to tackle was the political party itself.

He further noted that the way Nigeria political parties recruit people for key position was a reflection of the political system.
