British Open Continues This Weekend

Despite the confident pre-tournament talk about how well he had been hitting the ball, Tiger Woods’ results in his British Open first round Thursday at St. Andrews were very much the same as they’ve been all year.

Woods opened the tournament at the place where he’s won two of his three British Open titles with a 4-over-par 76  the highest round he’s ever posted at St. Andrews.

After seven holes Thursday, he was 4-over par and 10 shots out of the lead.

Given the benign scoring conditions, this 76 was worse than the 80 Woods posted in his first round of the US Open last month at Chambers Bay. His 40 on the front nine was the worst opening-nine score posted among the first 39 threesomes.

Making it all even more unsettling was the front nine, with wind aid, was playing about two shots easier than the back nine.

“I fought hard,’’ Woods said. “I made so many mistakes. I made two bogeys with wedge in my hand and bogeyed a par 5. Not ideal.’’ British Open continues this weekend.
