BRING BACK RIBADU OR A RIBADU…Labour party National Youth Leader

Corruption is a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the very fabric of our nation. There is an urgent need for its fumigation so that the Augean stable can be cleansed. The right insecticide must be deployed to frontally confront this hydra-headed monster that is currently devastating our economy and people.

At the inception of The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) in 2003, former president Olusegun Obasanjo engaged the patriotic services of Nuhu Ribadu to help arrest and cage the monster called corruption. Ribadu waged a successful war against the monster which earned him numerous awards and commendation both locally and across the world. He was focused, resolute and dogged in the war.

Ribadu left a foot print in the EFCC that no other person has be able to erase. His records still speak for him. A case in view is the bribe from the  former governor of Delta State, James Ibori. Ibori had offered a 15 million dollar bribe to Ribadu to forestall his investigations, prosecution and possibly his being sent to jail. Ribadu blatantly refused bribe because he is patriotic and not avaricious. This led to his depositing the money with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Ribadu would have accepted the huge bribe and subsequently, sweep the accusation under the carpet. Ribadu is patriotic, honest, just and forthright. These are the attributes the EFCC chair must have. People like Dariye of Plateau State and Alamieyesigha of Balyesa State (ex-governor) are typical 419 guys entrusted with government treasury and caught red-handed looting-Ribadu prosecuted them. Since his departure from the EFCC we are yet to find another patriotic Nigerian to continue the anticorruption war.

Since the departure of Nuhu Ribadu, the highly feared EFCC became a “Rag Tag” for politicians. From the political terrain they defined the direction and operations of the EFCC. Some people wonder why the likes of Mrs. Waziri and Mr. Lamorde could not make any impact in the war against corruption like Nuhu Ribadu did. The reason is not farfetched- they are also corrupt. The job of the EFCC boss requires an incorruptible, honest, patriotic, dogged and resolute individual to succeed.

We are calling on the president to bring back Ribadu or a Ribadu to help crystallize the war against corruption. Mr. President should as a matter of urgency look into the pedigree of Nuhu Ribadu; who to a large extent contributed to some of the achievements of the Obasanjo administration. He made Nigerians understand that corruption can be tackled when the political will is there. He did not shirk his responsibilities. He frontally confronted the unpatriotic characters whose only purpose in government is the acquisition of filthy lucre. These avaricious elements were tamed to a reasonable extent before the departure of Ribadu from the EFCC.

However, if in the wisdom of the APC, Ribadu will not be given the opportunity to serve having left the APC for the PDP then, a Ribadu should be appointed to lead the anti-corruption war in a transparent, dogged and dogmatic manner. We believe there are capable hands across the length and breadth of this nation-patriotic Nigerians who are not only willing but, also ready to lay down their lives for this course. These men and women can be found in every nook and cranny of the country. Mr. President, please find them and engage them without any much ado.

Mr. President you will only succeed if men and women like Ribadu or men with the genes of Ribadu are engaged and deployed to effectively lead the war against corruption. The current leadership of the EFCC lacks the vigor, tact, credibility, dexterity, doggedness and the courage required to fight against corruption. Whoever is engaged as the EFCC chair will go a long way in determining the direction and success of the anticorruption war in Nigeria.

Mr. President Bring Back Ribadu or a Ribadu now.
