The national boxing coach, Anthony Konyegwachi, is optimistic that Nigerian boxers to this year’s All Africa Games (AAG) will make the country proud when the events kick off in Congo Brazzaville from September 4 to 19 this year.

Konyegwach, speaking to Daily Independent at the National Stadium during the just-concluded Kenneth Minimah Open Boxing Championship, said by the standard the boxers demonstrated, he was sure Nigerian boxers will do well at the Games.

“We have never lacked talent in this country; what we lack is adequate preparation. Nigeria is blessed with boxer. From what we are seeing at this championship, Nigerian boxers will make the country proud.

“The major snag is inadequate training, which has been the bane of boxing and other sports in the country.”

Towing similar line, assistant national coach, Adura Olalehin, has posited that the coaches are poised to make Nigeria proud by coming up with fit and hungry boxers.

Olalehin spoke in a telephone interview from the camp of boxers at the National Stadium in Lagos, saying the pugilists are training very hard to make Nigeria proud.

“The boys are training very hard; we are really trying our best to make Nigeria proud by coming up with fit and hungry boxers.

“You know All Africa Games is a big competition, so we are trying to face all opposition. The national coach, Anthony Konyegwachi, is really doing everything round the clock to ensure that we are better represented.”

It would be recalled that 30 boxers were selected to open camping ahead of the All Africa Games in Congo in September. The sport had been Nigeria’s strong point in international meets and the coaches have vowed to bring back the glory days.
