The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has refuted reports alleging that it promised sterilisation or abortion services to pregnant women and girls rescued from Boko Haram camps in the North Eastern part of the country.

The Executive Director of the UNFPA, Babatunde Osotimehin, made the clarification in Abuja, yesterday.

Osotimehin said: “We have not advocated either through the government or through any other agency for abortion or sterilisation as has been carried in the Nigerian press. We don’t offer this and we do not advocate this. I need to make it clear. We support life, we support people, we support to them make their decisions to be able to carry their pregnancies.

“UNFPA does not promote abortion as a method of family planning nor does it have any abortion-related interventions in Nigeria. UNFPA supports voluntary family planning so that women and men can freely determine the number, timing and spacing of their children as well as prevent unwanted pregnancies – it is their human right to do so and to have the means to exercise that right. This helps reduce recourse to abortion.”

Besides, UNFPA has, from 2014 to May 2015, distributed 13,319  dignity kits to women and girls in the crisis-prone North East.

Dignity Kits are bags containing accessories needed by women at the point of delivery or for their monthly cycle. The kit contains towel, blanket, soap, detergent, tooth brush and paste, shampoo, underwear and pants, a pair of socks and many other item.
