Blood Shortage Crisis Looms In Nigeria

Nigeria would suffer a shortage of blood in its blood banks by the end of September, unless measures are taken by government against it.

This projection is based on the fact that the United States Centre for Disease Control (CDC), which is  the major financier of the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), the agency of government responsible for recruiting voluntary blood donors to donate blood in Nigeria, is about to suspend funding from September  this year.

This development, if not checked, would affect health services in the country even as the management of  some tertiary health facilities have already raised the alarm of the shortage of blood-related products for victims of bomb blasts in the north-eastern part of the country.

Head, Donor Care branch of the NBTS, Helen Goyo, expressed concerns in an exclusive interview with Daily Independent in Abuja.

She called on the federal and state governments to, as a matter of urgency, make arrangements to take full responsibility and funding of the agency, to save it from total collapse.

She also called on Nigerians and private organisations to come to the aid of the agency in any way possible for it to continue it services of getting blood for use by Nigerians at critical moments.
