Two-time Federation Cup champion, Heartland FC of Owerri, Imo State, was kicked out of the tournament by non-league side from Benin City, BJ Foundation, at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi, Benue State, on Wednesday.

The Benin team pulled the upset with a 2-3 win over the Owerri side.

Despite going in front early in the game through John Ibe, BJ Foundation rallied strongly to grab three quick goals off the feet of Junior Osaghae, Saturday Erimuya and Chinedu Chima while Ebere Odiche claimed the consolation goal for Heartland.

Heartland chief coach, Bethel Orji, has admitted that their Federation Cup opponents were the better side on match day.

Orji said the tight and tedious match schedule of the ongoing Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) negatively affected the performance of his wards in the encounter.

“Well, we lost 2-3 to BJ Foundation, that’s football and perhaps the surprises of the Federation Cup.

“I think the BJ Foundation were the better team today and deserved their hard-fought victory.

“I believe my players were tired due to the stress and tediousness of playing league matches Wednesday and Saturday.

“However, we are out of this year’s Federation Cup, we hope for better luck next time as we will devote 100 per cent of our time to the league,” Orji told to supersport.com.

Heartland was winner in the 2011 and 2012 edition of Nigeria’s oldest and most glamorous football championship.
