The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has congratulated Nigerians on the peaceful conduct of the March 28 and April 11 general elections in the country.

Ezeokafor, who applauded Nigerians for shunning violence during the polls, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Wednesday that the nation’s electoral process was gradually improving.

“In spite of pockets of complaints here and there, local and international observers rated the last elections as largely free and fair.

“This is huge progress for our country and its electoral system,” the cleric said, calling for more prayers for the unity of the country.

He appealed to those who lost in the elections to see their loss as the will of God or channel their grievances to the courts.

Ezeokafor, however, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve on the electoral process.

“We want future elections to be even better, with INEC correcting the lapses observed in the March 28 and April 11 elections. “The logistics of distributing sensitive election materials should be perfected while steps should be taken to ensure that the card readers work smoothly.

“Ballot snatching and other forms of electoral fraud should be blocked.

“INEC should ensure that people caught sabotaging or violating the electoral process, no matter how highly placed, are investigated and prosecuted,” Ezeokafor said.

The cleric urged the President-elect, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to see all Nigerian as one, regardless of tribe, religion or party inclinations.
