Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has debunked allegations making the rounds that the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the state plans to kidnap immediate past Senate President, David Mark.

It is also allegeded that the kidnap of Mark is intended to pave the way for the APC candidate in this Saturday’s senatorial election, Daniel Onjeh to defeat Mark who is of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Mark and Onjeh are expected to lock horns during the re-run of the Benue South senatorial district elections expected to hold this weekend.

Describing the allegations as baseless, Ortom asked “Why do we need to kidnap someone that is not in contention about Zone “C” (Benue South) elections?

He explained “I have never been a violent person, even when I contested as governor despite all the intimidation and the violence that was unleashed against me I never retaliated; I never went after anyone because I knew that the power of the votes belong to the people.”

The Governor observed that “It’s very clear from our outing in the last one week the people of Zone “C” have overwhelmingly decided to vote for APC and there is no reason for any form of violence or kidnapping. We are very comfortable with the support we have in Zone “C” and we will win the elections.”

Ortom who was confident that the APC would carry the day said “Today if you go to the zone, the David Mark camp is not going out to campaign, to solicit for votes, they are depending on violence that they will unleash on the people. I have spoken to the security people in the state and they have assured me that they will provide adequate security for the elections and I am confident that they will take care of the safety of our people.”

He said “They say we have imported thugs; I don’t believe in thugs, you can testify to that that when I came in (as governor) I completely banned the issue of thuggery in the state. Thuggery is not the way to go and we cannot talk about it. They are the ones bringing people to come and unleash terror on my people but the security agents will contain them.”

According to him, “They are the ones talking of kidnapping. We don’t need to kidnap anybody. We have completely eliminated kidnapping in Benue state. Before we came in kidnapping, armed robbery and killings were the order of the day but we have been able to reduce it to its barest minimum.”

Ortom however insisted that “We are ready for free, fair and transparent elections, we are not talking about rigging because we have the support (of the people of the zone). All we are saying is let there be free, fair and transparent elections and we are sure we are going to win” the elections in the zone.
