The Benue State House of Assembly (BSHA) has approved the request of the Governor, Samuel Ortom, to borrow N10 billion to cater for some of the state’s immediate needs.

The request for the loan was conveyed to the House in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Targema Takema, on the premise that the new administration inherited an empty treasury.

The BSHA gave the approval during its plenary session at the Assembly complex in Makurdi on Thursday.

Lawmakers, including Benjamin Adanyi, representing Makurdi North state constituency (APC); Joseph Ojobo, representing Ogbadibo state constituency (PDP) and Ianna Jato, representing Katsina-Ala East state constituency (PDP), argued in favour of the request.

While they advised their colleagues to consider the request, they urged the state government to reduce borrowing and step up internally generated revenue, to complement federal allocation.

The House unanimously voted in favour of the request.

Meanwhile, the weight of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the BSHA was depleted on Thursday, as member representing Obi state constituency, Nick Eworo, defected from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Eworo, who spoke with newsman shortly after the Assembly’s plenary session on Thursday, said he was falsely accused of masterminding the emergence of the Speaker who was from a minority party (APC) and subsequently expelled (from the PDP).

He observed that the PDP raised other false allegations against him, such as wooing two other PDP members to vote for the APC candidate.

He explained that he did not challenge the action because he wanted peace to reign.

Earlier, the Speaker, Terkimbi Ikyange, stated that Eworo was expelled from PDP on June 16 by the Obi Local Government Area chapter of the party.

He explained that Eworo decided to join the APC to have a platform.
