The Bayelsa State government has set up a committee on flood control following alerts of imminent flooding in the state by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) this year.

Mr. John Jonah, Deputy Governor of the state, inaugurated the committee at the weekend in Yenagoa.

The flood control committee is chaired by Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, with Kuroakegha Dorgu, Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Ministries of Housing and Urban Development, Special Projects, Environment and the Bayelsa State Physical Planning and Development Board as members.

Jonah said that the committee was constituted to enlighten members of the public on issues associated with flooding in the state in the rainy reason.

He stressed the need for people to be cautioned not to dump refuse in the gutters and also avoid building on drainage lines, which could prevent the flow of water.

Jonah advised the committee to acquaint itself with reports of the 2012 flood management committee and the 2012 post-flood management committee.

The Deputy Governor also urged the committee to also collaborate with relevant federal agencies such as NIMET and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Responding on behalf of the committee, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the chairman, assured the state government that the committee would carry out its assignment diligently.

Ewhrudjakpo who was represented by Kuroakegha Dorgu, his lands and survey counterpart, said that the committee would endeavour to procure relevant documents to assist it in the execution of the task.

He also thanked the state government for finding members of the committee worthy to serve.
