Former Governor of Bayelsa State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timipre Sylva, has said he is still eligible to run for governorship election in the state.

There had been speculation that he would contest the next governorship election in the state which is expected to hold sometime in the last quarter of this year.

Sylva was among five governors including Ibrahim Idris (Kogi), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) and Liyel Imoke (Cross River), who were sacked by a Supreme Court ruling in January 2012 which held that their elongated tenure was illegal.

He defected to the APC in November 2013 after he was denied a second term ticket by the PDP in November 2011.

He contested for the Bayelsa East Senatorial District in the last general elections but lost to PDP’s Ben Murray-Bruce.

Sylva told newsmen in Yenagoa on Friday that he was still eminently qualified to vie for the office of governor under the laws of the land.

He said however that although he was eligible to run for governorship, the emergence of APC and its political successes in the state were not about him but about the party.

Sylva, who represented the APC as co-chairman on the Federal Government Transition Committee 2015, said only the party has the prerogative to decide who should be the standard bearer at the governorship election.

He said the party would take the final decision at the appropriate time and that whoever it presents as governorship candidate would win the election.
