The member representing Dass Constituency at the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Maryam Garba Bagel, has revealed detalils about how she defeated incumbent Deputy Speaker of the state’s assembly, Saleh Jumba, in the last election.

Bagel, the only female lawmaker in the State House of Assembly, in an exclusive interview with Daily Independent in Bauchi on Thursday, attributed her victory in the last election primarily to the failure of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

She said, “As a woman people were surprised that I defeated an incumbent lawmaker and a deputy speaker for that matter. It was  due to my hard work and due to the fact that the people needed change.”

Speaking further, Bagel said, “Only five out of 31 lawmakers in the last administration came back to the Assembly  and none from PDP made it. All these happened because of the failure of the last administration.”

According to her, the last legislatures also failed  the people because when the Executive mismanaged fund unhindered, adding, “The whole government failed and  people of Dass were disappointed in the leadership which was one of the reason I was able to defeat the Deputy Speaker.”

“Also we can not deny the Buhari’s change tsunami effect. I also worked for my victory because during the campaign I visited all the nooks and crannies of the local government  to mobilise the people,” she added.

Bagel who expressed her determination to empower women in her constituency assured that she will  introduce more women empowerment programmes in the state to ensure the upliftment  of their living standard.
