Super Eagles and Mainz 05 defender Leon Balogun has expressed his
sadness missing the 2018 World Cup qualifier against Zambia next month
after straining his adductor muscle in the early minutes of the defeat
to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
FSV Mainz 05 of Germany centre –back Balogun, who shone in the 2017
Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania in Uyo earlier this
month, was named in Nigeria’s 23 –man roster for the big match before
copping an injury.
Scans revealed that there is no tear so no operation is needed and the
club is hopeful he will return after the international break.
The player is expected to lead the Super Eagles’ defence in Ndola on
October 9 in the group opener against Zambia. And Balogun had been
looking forward to these qualifiers since he missed out on Brazil
through injury.
“I’m going to miss another very important game on our road to Russia
2018. Which is kind of sad. But I can’t change it so there’s no time
to hang my head”.
The Berlin born defender is not too downbeat “I’m glad that it is
“just” muscular so I’m certain to be back in action real soon. I have
full medical support from my club with therapy twice a day to make
sure I’m fit earliest possible”
“I’m all good apart from that injury. It’s very unlucky…the timing
as well as how it happened” the big defender tells
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr has named
Uche Henry Agbo as replacement for the qualifier.
Granada FC of Spain’s Agbo has already been contacted by Gernot Rohr
and his invitation letter sent by the Nigeria Football Federation. He
will join the other players who are expected to start arriving at the
Bolton White Hotel and Apartments, Abuja on Sunday.
