Former D’Tigers coach, Ayo Bakare, has defended his era as coach of the team, saying that his efforts at that time midwifed the potentials, which worked tremendously for the current coach, Will Voigt, that led the team to win the trophy after 33 years wait.

Speaking in a chat with SaharaReporters, Bakare, , throughout the 2015 Afrobasketball Championship, was giving his insight and technical savvy on his “Tape the Rule” concept where he analyses the strength and weakness of all Nigerian opponents. He categorically stated that he battled poor finance and injury worries during his era as D’Tigers coach.

“There are a lot of elements that goes into the mentality of any team ahead of any international competitions. During my time, poor finance was one big factor because we don’t have enough post-camping funds, vis-a-vis other welfare packages.

“Even the players were not paid any or poor camp allowances. Another issue is that of injury worries to players like two or more players after their arrival in camp.

“In that situation, you can’t change then because the federation couldn’t afford the cost of new players. As worse as it was, we have to register such unfit players for the competitions then hoping that they will recover in the course of the tournament. Right now, only Ike Diogu was injured,”

Meanwhile, former D’Tigeress captain, Mactabene Amachree, praised the recent victory of D’Tigers on her recent post on facebook, which read thus: “History is set in stone for the D’Tigers first time ever to be called King of the jungle-African Champions. What a better way to win it through your nemesis, Senegal and Angola. God’s time is the best. We salute D’Tigers’ courage,” she stated.
