South Africa at the weekend ended Nigeria’s domination of the African Youth Athletics Championships (AYC) topping the medal table with Nigeria placing third. Kenya, another strong athletics nation in the continent was second.

The second edition of the championships ended on Sunday in Mauritius.

Nigeria, which won the first edition at the same venue two years ago, placed third with two gold and four silver medals having arrived late in the tournament for financial reasons.

Technical Director of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, regretted that Nigeria missed the sprint and quarter-mile events following the conclusion of the events before her contingent arrived.

“We actually came 3rd.  South Africa and Kenya placed 1st and 2nd respectively. We won the girls medley relay with a championship record and girls race walk. We also recorded silver in the girls 200m and boys triple and long jump events. Our team’s late departure cost us the 100m boys and girls, 400m boys and girls and Octathlon.”

Nisiama expressed excitement in the performance of the team in the Africa Youth championship.

“I’m excited about the performance of our girls. The high point was the girls race walk gold medal won by Florence Olude. It is encouraging that our strategy of diversifying into other areas not so traditional to us is working. I knew that we can dominate Race Walk in Africa and that is why I have been encouraging that event. With this victory now, there is no going back on providing full support to that event henceforth.
