Awoniyi Signs For Liverpool

Flying Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has completed a move to join Premier League side Liverpool on Monday.

The 18-year-old was immediately sent on loan to German side FSV Frankfurt, which plays in the Bundesliga 2.

The Reds have reportedly seen off competition from Portuguese side Porto and French outfit Monaco to land the young striker in a deal worth a reported £800,000. The fee could ultimately rise to £3m with add-ons.

Awoniyi previously played for Imperial Academy in Abuja.

He has also represented Nigeria at the U-17 and U-20 World Cups. He previously earned a call-up to the senior Nigeria squad in 2013, but is still uncapped at present.

As such, he would not have qualified for a UK work permit at present. Rather than even applying for one, the Reds opted to immediately loan Awoniyi to Germany.

The team will hope that the starlet performs well enough to force his way into the Nigeria senior squad again – which could ultimately earn him a work permit – or else stays in Germany long enough to qualify for a passport, at which point he would be entitled to work in the UK as an EU citizen.
