Armed men suspected to be hired killers on Tuesday stormed the home of Chief Iyerite Awululu, the paramount ruler of Oluasiri in Nembe Local Government of Bayelsa State.

The five armed men left the 56-year-old traditional ruler with machete cuts.

The armed men attacked the paramount rulers home at about 2:30am.

Sources close to the family said the bandits scaled the fence of Awululu’s  private residence in Yenagoa, the state capital, and broke into his bedroom.

“On entering the bedroom, they started inflicting machete cuts on him. Many of his siblings could not come to his rescue because of fear.

“When they (the hoodlums) could not hear his cry anymore, they left him for dead. “He was left in his pool of blood unconscious and helpless”, a family member who did not want his name mentioned, said.

The source added that the assailants later returned to the residence at about 5:00am, apparently to confirm if the monarch had died,  but could not find him as concerned neighbours had rushed him to an undisclosed hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

“On July 19, 2016 at about 0315hours, three men armed with machetes went to the residence of one Chief Iyerite Awululu, the paramount ruler of Oluasiri, on Otiotio Road, Yenagoa.

“They (robbers) cut off the burglary proof, stole N9, 000 and wounded the King with their machetes,” Butswat said, and added efforts had been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects and that investigation was ongoing.
