In line with positions expressed by different stakeholders on the need for the appointment and engagement of professionals on government communications and its relevant board, Federal government has indicated readiness to make do with marketing professionals.

This position was expressed during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to the head office of Advertising Practitioner’s Council of Nigeria, APCON in Lagos yesterday.

At an interactive session with newsmen and APCON team, the minister though admitted that the absence of the council has left a big gap in the running of APCON as a regulator and institute, he however promised that government was working hard to ensure the board is constituted to enable the agency carry out it functions effectively.

He said, “APCON is a specialised organisation and those who should serve in the board must be thoroughbred professionals, expert in their various fields.

“Fortunately, government is beginning to see it in that light. And we hope the next board of APCON would be a board that can lead and advise.

“APCON is not just like any other board where you bring people to reward for their political support. There are enough people we can reward for political support elsewhere. But when it comes to professional bodies like APCON, you need people that can do the job.”

While reteirating the huge role played by the industry in the past, Mohammed said the administration understands the enormity of the role the regulatory agency as well as its partners can play in driving not only economic growth but also promoting moral values in the society hence the need to give it all the needed support.

Mohammed assured stakeholders of government determination to provide the needed unds and capacity that will assist in carrying out its job effectively.

He said, “APCON in my reckoning is more important, even much more than security especially in the run-up to election.

“Not only in the area of politics, APCON is needed in the areas of our moral values and interpersonal relationships. We need to adequately empowered them to give us a safe environment. We understand that the absence of council is preventing the agency from doing its job.”
