Members of the North-East youth wing of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has rejected the clamour for the position of the Senate President to be zoned to their area.

The group, instead, called on leaders of the House of Representatives to endorse Yakubu Dogara as the Speaker of the 8th House of the National Assembly.

The group which comprised APC youth leaders from Bauchi, Yobe, Taraba, Gombe, Borno and Adamawa states canvassed support from stakeholders in the party for Dogara, describing the North-East as the poorest geo-political zone in the country that required the backing of other zones in the sharing of political offices.

Taraba State APC Youth  Leader, Abduallahi Baba Ade, stated this while addressing newsmen in Bauchi.

He said the North-East region produced the highest number of votes in the Presidential, National Assembly and governorship elections, hence it will be fair for the

position of the Speaker to come to the region.

“Since the inception of democracy in the country, political appointments given to the North-East have not yielded the needed development in the region because of the calibre of people who were at the helm of affairs.

“We have been consulting with our colleagues from other zones on the candidature of Yakubu Dogara and the responses we have received was very encouraging and assuring.

“The agitation for Senate President to the North East is unfair and unrealistic as the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, is a Muslim and his vice is a Christian.

“In the same vein, the Senate President should be a Muslim while the Speaker should be a Christian this time around.

“Since the nation’s Independence, the highest position the region ever occupied was the position of late Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and this time around we need the position of Speaker of the 8th National Assembly,” he said.
