Member of the National Assembly representing Ogbia Federal Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sodaguwo Festus-Omoni, has expressed concern that  the All Progressives Congress-controlled Federal Government may not promote women empowerment in the country.

Festus-Omoni stated this at the weekend during a reception in her honour at the Ogbia Brotherhood Hall, Ogbia Town, Bayelsa State.

She said  the APC had shown that it was not women-friendly given the current ratio of men to women in the National Assembly.

Drawing a contrast, Festus-Omoni said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was a women-friendly party that has continued to give women the opportunity and political space to grow since 1999.

“In the National Assembly, we have 20 women. Out of those 20 women, we are 16 PDP women. We are grateful to PDP for giving us this opportunity,” she said.

She  observed that even President Muhammadu Buhari and his wife, Aisha, had demonstrated through their body language that the socio-economic condition of women might not receive adequate attention.

“APC does not stand for women. You can see the body language of our present President. You can see the body  language of the wife of the President.

“They are not going to do anything for the women because they feel that a woman is supposed to be in the house, silent, look pretty,” she said.

On the forthcoming December 5, 2015 governorship election in Bayelsa State, the lawmaker declared that there was no alternative to Governor Seriake Dickson of the PDP.

Festus-Omoni argued that Dickson had in line with the gender-sensitive  posture of the PDP ensured that besides her, four other women also got elected into the state House of Assembly during the last general elections, among other achievements.
