Following reports of the six-hour grilling of Mrs. Toyin Saraki, wife of the Senate President on Tuesday in Abuja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Wednesday absolved the party of complicity in the matter.

Senate Waku had alleged that APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was behind the investigation for money laundering activities of Mrs Saraki, while she was first lady of Kwara State, as payback for the politics within the upper chamber that saw her husband, Bukola, emerge as Senate President, against the party’s will.

Some other concerned persons have also alleged that the party leadership sent EFCC against the Saraki family to ridicule the Senate President.

Addressing journalists at the party secretariat in Abuja, Odigie-Oyegun said the matter was filled with speculation and could have been triggered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State which is where the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki is from.

According to him, the PDP has to be nudged to know if they are the originators of what is now the investigation by the EFCC on the Senate President’s Wife.

“We are completely, totally, absolutely, innocent of it. What we have not done like in the PDP days is to rush and say and interfere with the processes of the EFCC which our president has made quite clearly, everybody should be ready to carry out their legitimate functions without interference.

“I Want to assure you without doubt, that the APC absolutely has nothing to do with this, she’s not on trial by the way. It is an investigation that has to do with the Senate President’s wife.

“The EFCC is doing what it thinks it has to do” Oyegun explained.

Immediately after news of the probe broke on Monday, the Kwara State chapter of the PDP denied that it wrote any petition against Mrs. Saraki, saying that the signatures of its members were forged.

The chapter’s Publicity Secretary, Kola Olawoye, dissociated the party from it, telling journalists that neither him nor the party had anything to do with the petition, saying it was a case of impersonation, since the signature on the petition was forged.
