The people of Achalla community in Awka North council area of Anambra State have called on the Anambra State Police Command to come to their aid against the spate of attacks on their people by a cult group.

The people of the community Tuesday staged a peaceful protest with placards at the Police Command headquarters in Awka.

They alleged that a cult group named Black Eagles, sponsored by some influential persons from within and outside the community, were beating residents and destroying houses of people who were not loyal to them.

The spokesperson for the protesters, Mr. Obinna Nweke, said some of the cult members had been arrested with dangerous weapons and called for their prosecution.

Nweke said the community was calling on security agencies to save the situation in Achalla community and liberate the people from fear and danger.

He said, “We, the Achalla people, no longer sleep in peace because a cult group which was formed about a year ago has taken over the job of our community vigilante group and are now terrorising us.

“Some of them were arrested with axes, machetes and guns but surprisingly they were released without trial. We want the police to investigate the cases of arsons in our community and bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to book.

“These attacks were being carried out under the protection of some indigenes of Achalla and influential people in Awka North. The Police must intervene now before it consumes us,” he said.
