The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) on Monday March 14, 2016 in Abuja called for the passage of the National Endowment Fund for Arts Bill into law.

The ANA President, Mallam Denja Abdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that if the bill becomes law, it would proffer lasting solution to the unending problems in the arts and literary sectors.

He commended the initiator of the bill, Sen. Shehu Sani and expressed the support of ANA towards its prompt passage.

“The Senator is still receiving inputs and consulting with the stakeholders communities that will benefit from the eventual passage of the bill.

“ANA has already clearly expressed its support to join him to strongly advocate for the speedy hearing and passage of the bill.

“The bill when passed and signed into law will tremendously transform the literary and the entire creative sector.

“It will bring into being a system in which worthy artistic ventures will have a pool of funds to draw from,’’ he said.

Abdullahi explained that if the bill becomes an Act, its operations in the art sector would be comparable to that of Tertiary Education Trust Fund on tertiary institutions.

“The model of the endowment fund for the arts is one in which the saner world have used to shore up their artistic and cultural heritage.

“Nigeria is coming to it rather late, but I am happy that the Minister of Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed, has seen the imperative for instituting this endowment fund,’’ he said.

Abdullahi said that with the two key members of the legislative and executive arms – the senator and the minister – thinking along the same line on the matter, the bill would be passed eventually.
