Lagos – Emmanuel Amuneke, the former Super Eagles winger, has proffered a solution to the team’s revival, saying the country is gradually working to dominate the continent again in men’s football.

Amuneke, who spoke in a monitored radio programme, said Nigeria has much work to do if it must translate the success story at the junior levels to the Super Eagles.

He has, therefore, suggested that the selection of players at the age grade levels reflect long term objectives for the senior national team.

According to the 1994 Africa Footballer of the Year, the promotion of players like Kelechi Iheanacho and Musa Muhammed to the Super Eagles, both winners of the U-17 world Cup in the UAE in 2013, is an indication that more grease to the machinery that works the gears of Nigeria’s renowned U-17 scouting system can impact the senior teams in the near future.

He stressed the need to encourage a credible process in selecting outstanding players who are truly under the stipulated age and guide them to harness their talents which eventually becomes useful for the Super Eagles selectors.

“Even if you see a good player today, that does not give the player a guarantee that he will make a team (age grade) because he still has to have an MRI test because it is the MRI test that will determine if the player will really make the team.

“So, there are a lot of factors that guide this category and these factors are what you cannot do away with, but I am happy because even though it takes efforts and time, we as a nation are collectively trying to get it right.

We have seen the likes of Iheanacho, Musa Mohammed coming to Super Eagles; we also have the like of Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Nwakali and Samual Chukwuma plus other young players looking forward to also be at the top level. It is good for our football and we must encourage the people doing this job.

“This is the category we must get right and the moment we start getting it right in this category, the Super Eagles will be right for it,” he said.
