Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has tasked the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) to exhibit high professional standards by standing firm on strict adherence to global best practices in corporate governance, whether in the private or public sector.

Governor Ambode gave the advice in his address at the 39th ICSAN Annual Conference/Dinner held at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

The governor, who was represented on the occasion by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Dapo Thomas, said that the ultimate goal of democracy was good governance measured by the degree of improvement in the general well-being of the people as well as the involvement of the people in governance.

The governor said: “Lack of transparency in the governance process and procedures is against the principles of democracy. In addition to breeding distrust between the government and the people, a non-transparent system creates room for selfish manipulation and abuse.

“It also limits the opportunity for public participation in the process of formulating and implementing policies and programmes. This disconnection often results in policies that have little or no impact on people’s lives.”
