Nigeria’s female athletics stars, Doreen Amata and Blessing Okagbare settled for first and seconds positions respectively in the high jump and 100m women’s event race at the Jamaica International Invitational Meet held at the National Stadium in Kingston Jamaica.

In the Women’s High Jump Doreen Amata cleared 1.90m to emerge winner while Lavern Spencer of St Lucia cleared 1.90m to place second as United State’s Maya Pressley cleared 1.78m to place third.

Amata was awarded the first spot having jumped first.

Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson won the 100m race with a time of 10.97secs beating Okagbare (11.05secs) who is the reigning Commonwealth Champion to second place. Alyson Felix with a time of 11.09secs came in third place.

Okagbare, fresh from the Bahamas Relays where she helped Nigeria to a gold medal in the 4X200m event and also secure qualification for the 4x100m event in the 2016 Rio Olympics, was the only athlete from the country on parade.

In the men’s version, former World Record holder, Asafa Powell, ran a world leading time of 9.84secs to win the 100m men’s event.

Powell, who has been consistent on a comeback trail of sorts, held off challenges from start to finish with his customary lightening moves out the blocks. Ryan Bailey (USA) 9.93secs who was booed during his introduction had to settle for second place, while a staple on Jamaica’s 4x100m, Nesta Carter, took 3rd place in 9.98secs.
