Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has assented to the Bill seeking stiffer punishment for rapists and people engaged in related sexual offences across the state.

The Governor announced his assenting to the bill shortly after playing host to the President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Mr. Chidi Ajaegbu, who led other top management of the institute on a courtesy call at the Government House, Minna.

Other bills passed into law by the Niger State House of Assembly and assented to by Aliyu included laws that provide for the constitution of Sharia courts in the state and the law to establish the Niger State Livestock and Fisheries Institute.

The law seeking stiffer punishment against rapists and sex offenders, according to him, was necessary as it will go a long way in checking all forms of abuses, including serving as deterrent to perpetrators and as well offer succor to potential victims.

Aliyu said, “Once people are aware the gavel of the law will strike hard on them for rape the ugly trend will reduce if not completely checked and one major factor why cases of rape which appears to be on the increase in our society is because existing laws are quite lenient on the offenders”.

The Governor, who has never hidden his disdain for rapists and sex offenders, said the law properly reflects his desire to provide safety to the vulnerable in the society especially female children who are repeatedly sexually molested.

The law providing for constitutional framework for Sharia courts across Niger State will go a long way in harmonising common bases for legal matters and will serve as reference point for judges of handling Sharia related cases, he said.
