Traders at Alade market, located on Allen Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos, have given conditions that should be met by the  Lagos State Government, before their relocation to a new place, preparatory to the redevelopment of the market.

Daily Independent recalled that last week the traders protested the moves by the government to move them out of the market, in order to make room for the redevelopment of the market.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, Adekunle Adeokun, Executive Secretary, Ikeja Local Government Area had said that  a 15-man committee had been set up to fashion out the relocation of the traders to a new market, built for them beside the main market.

According to Adeokun, “the LASG approved the upgrade of the market and the redevelopment of the market into a mega mall was not negotiable, saying that the traders had to pave the way for the contractor to move to site”.

He said that most of the traders kicking against the project were not the original shop owners and that the contractor had invested money on the project since the MoU was signed five years ago.

Also, the Managing Director of Masters Reality International Concepts Limited, Lai Omotola, said “the company last week came to take possession of the property in a bid to commence its redevelopment”.

He said, “On August 12, 2010, we signed a concession with the Ikeja Local Government under a BOT arrangement to redevelop Alade Market into a mega mall, to meet the standard of a mega city.
