UyoMr. Akan Okon , Akwa Ibom  Commissioner for Finance, has announced the state government’s readiness to strengthen collaboration with Federal Inland Revenue Service(FIRS) with a view to expanding tax net for enhanced revenue generation .

Speaking while playing host to a team from FIRS led by the Director and Acting State Coordinator for Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Cross River states, Mr. Innocent Ohagwu, the commissioner said that  there was need for exchange of relevant information that would aid the capturing of every individuals and  organisations required by law to remit taxes to government.

Mr. Okon who opined that public cooperation is one of the cardinal frameworks  that will define the future of tax administration in Nigeria said, Akwa Ibom government  has taken steps to put in place a robust tax compliance mechanism as part of its effort to diversify the economy from oil .

The finance commissioner stressed that it was critical to fashion out ways to secure public  buy-in on tax  to pave way for voluntary compliance, adding that people would be encouraged to pay taxes when they see that government has judiciously utilized their money  to provide tangible infrastructural amenities.

He further stated that Governor  Udom Emmanuel has earned the confidence of the people by towing the path of taking transformation to their doorsteps.

While canvassing that tax payment should be seen as a civic responsibility, Mr. Okon called on relevant authorities to enforce relevant tax laws in the system to guard against tax evasion and avoidance to ensure availability of funds for sustainable  development.

Commissioner Okon assured FIRS that Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration is a responsible one and as such, issues thrown up by  them would  receive adequate attention while tax dues  would be remitted into Federal Government’s coffers.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation from Federal Inland Revenue Service , Mr. Innocent Ohagwu , stated that their visit was to see how to  work hand in hand with Akwa Ibom government to step-up revenue generation in view of the present economic situation in Nigeria , which has taken a hard toll on finances of states and federal government.

Mr. Ohagwu sued for constructive partnership that would yield mutual benefits for both parties  especially in the  achievement of revenue targets , while also praying for a comprehensive audit assessment that would aid the  remittance of taxes due to the Federal Government.

In a related development ,the Commissioner for Finance  has said  that government is exploring avenues where the economy could be diversified to enhance revenue generation, job and employment creation for the socio-economic empowerment of the people.

The Commissioner stated this in Uyo when he received members of the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) ,who called on him in his office.

Mr. Akan Okon who described their visit as timely given the present economic crunch, expressed the desire of Akwa Ibom State government to key into the economic diversification strategies to maximally harness the huge potentials in the abundant natural resources especially in agriculture to heighten the state’s revenue base.

The State Coordinator of RMAFC, Mr. Welanye Damni in his address said, their visit was to familiarize themselves with the Ministry of Finance and to also synergies to  create ideas that could  bolster  fiscal efficiency as well as effectiveness in revenue mobilisation.

He commended the Commissioner and his team for taking the financial sector to a higher level through the initiation of  cardinal reforms, and expressed the hope that with their support, RMAFC will function  optimally in the State.

Present during the visit were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Eme-ete Imuk, Permanent Secretary ,State Budget Office and Acting Chairman, Internal Revenue Service, Pastor Nicholas Ekarika ,and the State Accountant-General, Mr. Linus Nkan.
