So, on Wednesday when the 19-year old Daniel Michael Edet, from Idoro in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom state was being paraded by the State Police Command for allegedly killing  his aunt, Glory Edet Ebere, some of those that witnessed the incident were moved to tears.

Speaking at the State Police Headquarters, Ikot Akpan Abia, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, Mike Okoli, said the arrest of the culprit was one of the major breakthroughs police had recorded recently.

He said the suspect used to live with his aunt and after a while, he left her unceremoniously.

“On June 11, 2015, he visited his aunt who lived alone and was about leaving for work. Daniel then disclosed his intention return to her. After refusing to accept him back to her house, he was said to have changed his mind and demanded for financial assistance.

“The refusal of the late woman to accede to his request resulted into a wrestle between the aggressive young man and the harmless aunt who was thrown to the floor and stabbed continuously till she gave up the ghost.

“Daniel did not stop there, he got her car key, locked the woman inside the house and drove her vehicle away. The following day, he came back to the house with his friend, one Ekemini Effiong James, and dragged the corpse of the deceased into her bedroom. Both of them cooked, ate and passed the night in that same house” the ACP stated.

According to Okoli, luck however ran out on Daniel and his friend as they were accosted by a vigilant neighbour when they wanted to dispose the corpse. This he said led to the arrest of the culprit and his accomplice.

After interrogation, the police boss said Daniel admitted to killing his aunt alone.

According to him, the suspect confessed that, “Ekemini Effiong James did not kill her but was aware of her death since he slept in the same room with him.

Both Daniel and Ekemini also confessed that they were members of cult group called ‘Highlanders’.

At a separate interview with Daily Independent Metro, Daniel admitted to the crime, saying it was a result of his greed. The 19-year old student of Uduak-Obong Secondary School, Obio Ibiono, Ibiono Ibom LGA, also admitted to being a member of ‘Highlander’ cult.

Okoli, however, said the suspects would soon be charged to the court. He said the police in their state would not relent in its effort to rid the state of criminal activities as they have the mercenaries and strategies to do so.

The ACP added that the state police command has recorded major progresses in its determination to save the lives and property of residents in the state.
