Akwa Ibom state governor, Udom Emmanuel has awarded contract for the urbanisation of the old, abandoned city of Oron. The contract, awarded to Wizchino Engineering Limited was in fulfilment his electioneering promises to transform Oron Federal Constituency and is expected to apart from giving the old riverine city a facelift, also address the menace of consistent erosion that threatened the area.

It would be recalled that the governor within the past few weeks, undertook a tour of the affected areas for a first-hand experience of the state of roads and gully erosion sites in the area.

Awarding the contract, the governor instructed the contractor to commence work immediately to salvage the unsavoury situation the residents of the area had faced in the past 30 years.

Addressing the people, Governor Emmanuel said “I am that Oro Governor that you were looking for, we are brothers and sisters from one family, I drink from the same river so I feel the plight of the people of Oro Nation.”

Accompanied by the Managing Director of Wizchino Engineering Limited, Engr. Jack Zou; the immediate past Minister of Housing, Lands and Urban Development, Mrs. Akon Eyakenyi; and the Commissioner for Works, Ephraim Inyang, the governor pledged to transform the entire landscape to enable the people feel the impact of government.

A resident, Mrs Arit Victor who spoke to Daily Independent said the community had batted with erosion for years and commended the governor for his intervention and prayed that the contract would not just be awarded on the pages of newspapers, but become reality.

“I am very happy with this promise, I thank God the Governor came in the rain, he has seen for himself what we have been going through, I really wish his promises would be different from what we used to receive from the last administration. Then you would hear 50 new roads in Oron on radio, you come here you wouldn’t see five. Longest bridge in Etebi Enwang, you go there, nothing. We will be greatly blessed if Udom Emmanuel would not play politics with Oro nation,” She said.
