Scores of visitors and staff of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) were
surprised as students of the institution barricaded access in and out
of the university.

It will be recalled that the university community had experienced
similar lockouts in the last two months by both students and staff
unions at the first generation university.

Though reasons for the barricade were not known as at press time, a
senior staff of the institution and executive of the Senior Staff
Association of Nigerian Uuniversities (SSANU ) told Daily Independent
anonymously that the union was not involved in the early morning
closure of gates to the university.

However, a 200 level student of mass communication. John Okoh, said
the barricade might not be unconnected with the poor sanitation and
accommodation challenges in the hostels..

He added that many of the rooms are presently infested with bed bugs,
adding that management of the institution seemed not concerned about
the issue.

On the contrary an unconfirmed accounts had it that the barricade
might not be unconnected with ploy by the students to seek for
postponement of examinaction scheduled to commence in two weeks time.

Effort to reach authority of the institution for comments did not yield results.

Meanwhile, the second gate of the university has been flung open to
traffic and movement in and out of the institution,
