LAGOS – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has given reasons it is planning to prosecute the September Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Tanzania with entirely home-base Super Eagles.

The match holds nothing for the three-time Africa champions after Egypt grabbed the sole ticket courtesy of a 1-0 defeat of Nigeria in Alexandria and the withdrawal of Chad from the qualifiers over financial challenges.

After it was reported at the weekend that there is a plan to prosecute the match against the Taifa Stars with entirely home Eagles, Independent scooped from the football house that cash crunch and the need to discover fresh legs from home for the World Cup qualifiers necessitated the decision.

A source from the NFF, who asked not to be named, revealed to Independent that there is no much emphasis on the match due to its ‘irrelevance’ for the reason it is being played.

“We are not really planning seriously for the match because winning it or losing it, we are not going to qualify for the Cup of Nations. It is disappointing that we won’t be qualifying,” he said.

“On the other hand, the coaches will use the match to discover hidden talents at home, especially as we are about to start playing World Cup qualifiers, so that is why we are seriously considering prosecuting the match with home-based players,” said the source, who is an active member of the board.

The Super Eagles play Luxembourg today in an international friendly match, preparatory to the fast-approaching Africa zone of the FIFA World Cup draws onJune 24. The Nigerian national side defeated Mali 1-0 on Friday with Manchester City star, Kelechi Iheanacho, scoring his first Super Eagles goal in the encounter.
