LAGOS – Salisu Yusuf, interim Super Eagles Coach, has insisted that the failure of the team to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon would not affect the players going into the FIFA World Cup qualifiers when the draw is made.

Yusuf, speaking on Sunday ahead of the friendly matches against Mali and Luxemburg and also the impending World Cup qualifiers, said he was optimistic that Nigeria would qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“We might have failed to qualify for the Cup of Nations, but I have confidence in these set of players in the team. It was painful that we won’t be going to Gabon and I know every Nigerian is equally feeling that way, but I bet you, we will not disappoint when the qualifiers start.

The former Enyimba and Kano Pillars coach said that the two friendly matches against Mali and Luxemburg will adequately prepare the team for the qualifiers, insisting that he would use the matches to try out some forgotten players.

“We are going to use the friendly matches to prepare the team for the World Cup qualifiers. You know we invited some players that have not played for a long time.

“Some of them are doing well in their clubs so we are going to see how they can fit in the new Eagles setting.

“Every Nigerian player that is doing well in his club is welcomed into Eagles and I believe that the NFF equally shares similar belief,” he said.

The Super Eagles, it will be recalled, has missed three of the last Africa Cup of Nations, prompting many Nigerians to call for an expatriate coach to handle the national team.
