Adesina: Getting The Reward For Loyalty

The appointment of Mr Femi Adesina as President Mohammadu Buhari’s media spokesman should surprise no one. He has endorsed Buhari consistently for years, right from when he first indicated a shot at the Presidency in 2003, even when only few journalists could vouch for the Army General. Perhaps, Adesina has even supported Buhari with his pen more than any known Nigerian man-in-the-newsjournalist. Yet he was not known to be a card-carrying member of Buhari’s political parties during the transformative stages; not even when the retired General finally formed his own party, the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC. Adesina’s agreeable treatises on the former military head of state were purely given on altruistic considerations. He loves Buhari’s Spartan lifestyle and considers it a symbol of avowed leadership traits. Given his simple lifestyle himself, with serious spiritual engagements in his church, Adesina is the last man who anybody would contemplate could venture into the murky waters of politics, by becoming the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE. But events now show that his time in the NGE is not a waste. His experience there should assist him in his new task.

When there was a little glimmer of hope that Buhari could ever lead Nigeria again, Adesina was relentless in his open support for him. He saw Buhari as upright and incorruptible and felt that he needed to be in power to sanitise our rotten society. Adesina could not have been spinning anything, and there couldn’t have been some strings attached to his patronising articles on Buhari, unless he was a clairvoyant who knew that the former military head of state would someday become Nigeria’s civilian President.  Buhari has come to acknowledge Adesina openly by appointing him as his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity. It is a worthy reward for a worthy friend of the president who shares the dreams and vision of a better Nigeria. Buhari must have recognized Adesina as a trusted friend and patriot who could help him drive the wheel of state to a safe haven, hence the appointment.

This media executive and graduate of English Studies from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), has shown that he can hold his own amid a babel of voices. When others chose to jump on the bandwagon to support popular candidates and political parties, even before the formation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, this man from a family of professors, followed his mind and endorsed a man of his conscience for the office of the president. Our hope is that he will sustain the qualities which President Buhari saw in him before making him his media spokesman. Integrity and commitment to the cause of state were some of the features that gave Buhari the presidency. Since it is said that birds of a feather flock together, one equally believes that Adesina will reflect these qualities as he handles the affairs of state with his principal.
