As part of efforts to enhance safety at airports in the country, Airport Council International (ACI’s) Airport Excellence (APEX) in safety programme has reviewed the gap analysis of airport’ infrastructure and operational procedures at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.

The programme, according to the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Engr. Saleh Dunoma was an initiative of ACI aimed at enhancing the level of safety at airports across the world.

“The APEX in safety programme is essentially a safety review – gap analysis of airports’ infrastructure and operational procedures benchmarked against International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standard and recommended practices,” Dunoma said.

He listed some of the activities during the programme to include an on-site assessment of the airport’s safety programmes in order to ascertain the compliance level with international best practices, identification of gaps as well as drawing up an action and implementation plan for the airport to address all vulnerabilities.

He added that the team’s safety search light was beamed on some aspects of MMA such as its aerodrome physical characteristics, safety management system, emergency wild life hazard management, night and day operations amongst others.

Dunoma stated that in addition to better service delivery, safer and improved passenger experience, the programme would go a long way towards enthroning a safety culture among the airport work force and stakeholders.

The APEX in safety programme, the FAAN boss said was launched in September 2011 with a pilot safety review conducted in Lome, Togo and that since then, five other safety reviews have been conducted covering four regions, which include Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and Latin America.
