Just as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was battling to announce the outcome of the governorship election, which took place in Abia State on April 11, unknown persons have set the Isiala Ngwa South of INEC on fire.

A competent source disclosed to Daily Independent that the arsonists came to the INEC office late Sunday night, poured petrol on the building torched it and disappeared. According to the source, the incident threw the entire vicinity into pandemonium as people took to their heels in fright.

It has not been established as at press time those responsible and their motive for the action, but sources that pleaded anonymity said it might not be unconnected with the governorship election held on Saturday.

The figures of the results released by the INEC showed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the poll with 7,133 as against the 5,686 votes scored by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). The figures were, however, disputed.

Sources said the council staff could not do anything to stop the invading group who wielded dangerous weapons and threatened to kill them if they made any suspicious movement, adding that the results of the poll may have triggered off the incident.

The incident was later reported to the police, which have begun investigation into the matter.

When he was contacted, the spokesman for the commission, Victor Enabor, said he was not yet aware of the incident but promised to investigate it.

However, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. Anthony Agbazuere, who hails from the area confirmed the incident.

Isiala Ngwa South is also said to be the council Area of the governorship candidate of APGA, Dr. Alex Otti, where he relocated late last year from Arochukwu.
