Abia State government on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, explained that the global economic crisis occasioned by the dwindling oil prices forced the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, to slash his salary, allowances and that of his aides by 50 per cent. Chief Press Secretary to the Abia State Governor, Mr. Godwin Adindu,

who stated this, pointed out that the governor’s action was also to identify with the workers’ plight in the state.

He said that with the sacrifice,

Governor Ikpeazu has demonstrated exemplary leadership, while lamenting that

the poor economy was a consequence of the global slide in oil prices which has a spiral effect on the federal allocation that comes to the states.

Adindu added that the Federal Government was also grappling with the same challenges.

According to him, “the governor had to cut down on many things including the number of his entourage as a way to save cost for the state and to restore and grow the state’s economy to stability.”

Adindu assured that the governor was making effort to clear the arrears of salaries of workers.

He called for the understanding and cooperation of the state indigenes with the government. Besides, he stressed that the governor was committed to service, work and performance.
