The final screening for judokas ahead of the 11th All Africa Games (AAG) will hold between July 21 and July 22 in Abuja, an official of the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF) has said.

The NJF Technical Director, Musa Oshodi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the screening would be the climax of the federation’s selection process.

Oshodi noted that the process began with national trials held on July 11 at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Academy, Sauka, Abuja.

The director said that no fewer than 50 judokas from across the country were invited for the screening.

Oshodi said the screening would hold at the Velodrome of the Abuja National Stadium, FCT.

According to the director, the final screening was imperative to ensure that Nigeria had quality representation at the Games scheduled to run from Sept. 4 to Sept 19 in Congo Brazzaville.

“Judo is a combat sport and the federation cannot take chances with the quality of judokas that will be taken to the Africa Games.

“Only the very best will be good enough for us. Nigeria cannot play the second fiddle at the Games,” Oshodi said.

While admitting that judo would be fiercely competitive at the Games, Oshodi, however, added that Nigeria was blessed with talents “capable of facing any opposition’’.

The director recalled a promise he made recently when he visited the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Alhassan Yakmut, that the federation would deliver many medals at the Games.

“When we visited the D-G of the commission, he tasked us to win medals at the Games and we promised we were going to deliver medals.

“We won’t disappoint the commission and we won’t disappoint Nigerians,’’ Oshodi vowed.

The director said that camping of judokas finally selected at the final screening would commence immediately.
