Nigeria’s Under-23 team will begin its quest for glory, as it confronts fierce rival, Ghana, in its opening match of the men’s football event of the All Africa Games today.

The Dream Team, as it is fondly called, was expected to play the Junior Pharaohs of Egypt in the first match, but the Egyptians withdrew from the Games due to unforeseen reasons.

Both Nigeria and Ghana have met at this stage four times, with Nigeria claiming victories on two occasions, Ghana won once with one draw between them.

Victory for the U-23 side will push the team top of the table after Ghana and Senegal played out a draw in Sunday’s opening match.

The team will miss the services of Shehu Abdullahi, Godwin Savior and Taiwo Awoniyi due to club commitment. However, coach Samson Siasia will be relying on the trio of Junior Ajayi, Oghenekaro Etebo and Aminu Umar to shoot down the Black Meteors today.

“We have a team capable of winning the gold medal for Nigeria,” Siasia said.

“It’s true we are going to miss some players but we have enough to help us do the job; we promise to do our best.”
