The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Perry Calderwood, on Wednesday said that more than 9,000 Nigerians were studying in various Canadian universities.

This was contained in a press statement issued by the Deputy Registrar, Information, University of Lagos, (UNILAG), Olagoke Oke, in Lagos.

The envoy said that there was the need for further collaboration between both countries in the area of education, to create better understanding and promote cultural and economic ties, among others.

“We have over 9,000 Nigerian students currently studying in Canada and I want to say this is a good trend. This is my second visit to this university and I am delighted to be here again, Calderwood said.

The envoy expressed the desire to see more partnership with UNILAG in the area of entrepreneurship, students and scholars’ exchange programme and capacity building.

The statement added that the UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, said that Nigeria had a lot of good institutions and he drew the attention of the High Commissioner to the university’s foundation programmes, with over six partner-universities worldwide.
