OVER 100 people have been killed following a fuel station explosion in flood-racked Accra, the capital city of Ghana.

According to media reports in Accra, many of the victims were seeking shelter at the fuel station when the explosion occurred on Wednesday night, local time.

Spokesman for Ghana’s national fire service, Billy Anaglate stated, “the flooding caused diesel and petrol to flow away from the gas station and into a fire from a nearby house which then led to the explosion.”

Most of Accra was under water after about four hours of heavy downpours, Joy FM reported.

Thunderstorms were over Accra at the time, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls said.

“According to surrounding observations during that time, there looks to have been numerous thunderstorms across Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo during their afternoon/evening hours,” Nicholls said.

Ghanaian President John Mahama, rushed to the scene with other government officials to assess the damage and coordinate the disaster response, TV3 Network reported.

Flooding is common in southern Ghana this time of the year as clusters of showers and thunderstorms move east to west across the equatorial region of Africa.
