Lagos – Relegation strugglers, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan, will be the guest of Rivers United on Sunday in one of the week 27 matches across the country.
This is one match pundits have given to the host on account of their form this season. Rivers United have topped the table on several occasions and are currently placed third with 41 points from 24 matches.
Shooting Stars, on their part, are 17th having played 24 times and earning 30 points in the process. But a loss in Port Harcourt on Sunday will further drag Oluyole Warriors down to the drop, even as they are currently a huge relegation candidate.
But following the resignation of Kadiri Ikhana from 3SC over monetary issues, the management engaged Gbenga Ogunbote, under whom, the former CAF Cup winners found a new form.
The Stars from Ibadan have lost only once in their last five matches. They have drawn one and won three, with victories against MFM in Lagos and home win against champions, Enyimba, marking the turning point for the side.
But against Rivers United, the Ogunbote wards will be fully stretched. United have lost twice, won twice and drew once in their last five matches.
Speaking to Independent, Ogunbote said that his desire was to ensure that 3SC were not relegated. He promised to put up a good showing in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
“All that we are planning and playing for is to ensure that Shooting Stars are not relegated. Against Rivers United, we will go out to play our game and hope for a good result,” he said.
In the reverse fixture in Ibadan on March 19, 3SC defeated Rivers United 1-0.
The two sides met on Thursday in the round of 16 of the Federations Cup, with United winning 3-2 on penalties after 0-0 full time.
