Lagos – Nigeria may miss out of the forthcoming World Amateur Team Championship (WATC) billed for Mexico fromSeptember 17-19, 2016, following the country’s failure to register for the championship on deadline day.
The Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), however, registered late for the championship late after paying the registration fee of N315,000 ($1500).
Against this backdrop, Nigeria has been placed on the awaiting list with other countries, who also registered late for the championship.
According to an inside source who pleaded anonymity, “Nigeria did not register on time because there was no money. We needed $1500.”
He said that the chances of Nigeria participating in the championship were not guaranteed.
“It is now 50-50, there is no guarantee because there are other countries still waiting too.”
Nigeria, he said, could benefit from the biennial golf conference which would hold simultaneously with the championship in Mexico – September 15-16, 2016.
On the conference he said, “It is a conference that will congregate all the world golf federations to discuss way forward for the game.”
“Nigeria stands to benefit from the conference because it help to give us recognition in the political scheming of the game and share ideas with other people. Staying aloof will not give us such advantage,” he said.
The NGF has been complaining of paucity of funds which has affected its programmes.
The President Cup (Nigeria Open) which was earlier billed for December 2015 till date remains a mere paper work as lack of sponsorship seemed to have put it on hold.
