…Kaniwood Wants A Share

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, inaugurated a committee to review the N3billion Nollywood grant to ensure it creates the most value.

At the inauguration in Abuja, Mrs. Adeosun, who addressed stakeholders in the movie industry said the fund’s review was meant to stimulate investments in the entertainment industry and ensure job creation.

She said, “The committee would review the programme, restructure it if necessary and to come up with an implementation plan with measurable and demonstrable deliverables and outcomes so that we ensure that we get maximum value for the industry and for the Nigerian people.

“We want to ensure sustainability. N3bn is not enough if we are going to give out money. What we need to do is to find a sustainable way to support Nollywood,” she said.

The minister expressed concerns over the huge incidences of piracy in the industry and urged the committee to evolve creative ways of dealing with piracy which is destroying the industry.

In a related development, the thriving Kano movie industry says it also wants a share of the cake.

Speaking from Kano, Director-General of Kano State Censorship Board, Malam Isma’il Na’abba Afakallah, said Kannywood as vast as it had not been given its fair share of a lot of interventions made for the movie sector.

“Nollywood is positioned as the second world’s largest producer of video movies with about 2,000 titles being produced per annum and a record from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) indicates that about 33% of the annually produced Nollywood films originate from Kannywood.

“Yet, the implementation record of the two initial components of Project ACT’s training and production programmes show negligible number of beneficiaries from Kannywood. For example, 247 practitioners benefitted with only 59 from Kannywood; 7 training institutions are earmarked for assistance with only one located within Kannywood domain. We also suspect that the innovation distribution record may be similar,” Afakallah said.
