Awka – The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s insistence that Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable, arguing that the president’s view showed that he has failed to realise the existence of new ways of resolving such issues.

The group, which spoke through its leader, Uchenna Madu, on Thursday, said President Buhari erroneously believes his intimidating tendencies directed at Igbo governors and the National Assembly members will deter them from actualising their dream of a sovereign Biafra.

“The president, in his sense of reasoning, believes that he will easily crush Biafra, maybe with his intimidating tendencies over Igbo governors, National Assembly members, religious/opinion/political leaders. MASSOB views the president’s constant negative comments on Biafra consciousness as a sign of jittery.

“As every revolutionary struggle has its own methodology, the current Biafra’s struggle for actualisation and restoration will continue to unfold as confusing methods to the president. The involvement of Niger Delta Avengers and other Niger Delta freedom fighters in the Biafra struggle will continue to haunt those opposed to the actualisation of Biafra,” Madu noted.

He said some of the decisions of the present administration in Nigeria were even assisting and justifying the struggle for Biafra Republic, adding that the consciousness of Christians in the Southern part and Middle Belt of the country had been reawakened.

He boasted that no man can crush Biafra because, according to him, God, history and humanity were on the side of the agitators.

Meanwhile, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has asked Britain to bar President Muhammadu Buhari from entering its country on account of his numerous violations of human rights and extra-judicial killings.

In a letter dated July 6 and addressed to the Secretary of State for Home Department, Rt. Hon. Theresa May, and copied several authorities in Britain, the group listed numerous instances of violation of human rights and instances of outright extra-judicial killings authorised by President Buhari.

In the letter titled ‘Request for Mr. Buhari Muhammadu D.O.B 17th December 1942 (President of Nigeria) be denied entry or excluded from the UK for public good’, the group said: “We refer to the Home Office policies with respect to individuals that have expressed views justifying terrorism in any shape or form. Further, those considered not to be of good character that ought not to be admitted, therefore must be excluded for public good.”

The group in the nine-page letter gave comprehensive biography of Buhari through his date of birth and enrolment in the army as well as his alleged undemocratic antecedents.

It said Buhari as a lieutenant colonel was among a group of officers led by Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo, who overthrew the Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. Again on December 31, 1983, according to them, he was one of the leaders of the military coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of President Shehu Shagari.

Giving further reasons why Britain must deny Buhari entry into the country, the group said that after assuming power as military head of state following the December 1983 coup, former Minister of Transport, Alhaji Umaru Dikko, was kidnapped following failed attempt by Buhari led government to extradite him from UK to Nigeria.

Those who participated in the kidnap attempt, it said, “received 10 years and 14 years, respectively, as the doctor and the shopkeeper were later sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, the Israeli organiser of the kidnap attempt got 14 years, and the Nigerian military man, 12 years. The men lost appeals to have their sentences reduced.

“At the peak of Sharia induced terror that claimed nearly 2000 lives”, the group continued, Buhari was quoted to have said: “I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria. God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country’’.

It is only in Nigeria that convicted criminals – who are serving prison terms in foreign countries – are eulogised as heroes. Public funds are even wasted to sing their praises on electronic media.
