Lagos – The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been asked to source for private funds for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, if it hopes to qualify for the tournament holding in Russia.
This means that the football house is being told in clear terms not to depend on the federal government for funds if it wants to reach the tournament finals in 2018.
For the qualifying series, Nigeria have been grouped alongside Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia in Group B.
Henry Nwosu (MON), former Green Eagles captain, who made the call, advised the NFF to seek for ways of sourcing for funds to prosecute its World Cup and other programmes, saying that it was not the duty of the Federal Government to fund the game.
According to him, any money from the government was a plus in the modern sports arrangement.
“I really support their programmes because I know that all that they are doing is to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup. After we miss the last Nations Cup, it will be unthinkable for Nigeria to miss the next World Cup.
“But the NFF should look beyond government for funding because in modern football, government does not fund the game. It is the duty of corporate sponsors to do that. Whatever that comes from the government is a plus because it is not their duty to do that,” he said.
He called for prayers for the Super Eagles, admitting that the national team was actually in a difficult group heading into the qualifiers.
